Prerequisites
- A Windows 10 or 11 (64-bit) PC. The official Steam page lists Windows only.
- 16 GB RAM, a GTX 1060 (3 GB) or better, DirectX 12 and 33 GB of free storage. An SSD is recommended.
- Steam installed, with Stronghold 4 in your library via the free demo download. Wishlisting the game also gets you launch notifications.

Getting into the demo
Open the Steam page
Go to the Stronghold 4 store page on Steam and download the demo. As of 2026-11-02, the official Steam page lists only Windows; no console versions have been announced.
Start the tutorial
The demo includes a tutorial mode. Play it before anything else: it walks you through placing a stockpile and granary, basic production buildings and unit controls, which you will reuse in every other mode.
Pick a mode
From the main menu you can enter Free Build (added October 8, 2026) or Skirmish (added October 19, 2026). The demo does not include the story campaign; that arrives with the full game.
Free Build walkthrough
Free Build drops you on the largest map Firefly has ever made for the series, in a peaceful valley. The mode's defining tool is the lightning icon at the top of the screen, which lets you grant yourself instant gold and honor, or summon an enemy invasion whenever you choose. The demo shows day and time in the top corner; one in-game day is roughly one real minute.
Lay down storage first
Place a stockpile near the woods and a granary near your keep. Without storage, nothing you produce gets collected.
Start food and wood
Build woodcutters, houses for peasants, and apple or wheat farms with bakeries. Dairy farms feed cheese workshops; hop farms and breweries supply ale for inns. Hunters can target rabbits, boar or deer for banquets.
Climb the rank system
Spend honor to rank up. Ranks unlock building tiers: the market arrives at the second rank (Scout), and the top rank (Duke) unlocks the new Captain unit. In Free Build you can grant yourself honor via the lightning icon and jump straight to max rank.
Set up a market economy
Place a market, then use its auto-buy tab to maintain target amounts, for example 500 wood and 500 stone, plus food types. Set weapons in the armory to auto-buy in batches of ten so recruitment never stalls.
Build military structures
Place an armory and a barracks. Recruiting Captains costs honor; mansions generate honor over time (around three per day). Train a mix of archers, crossbowmen and longbowmen.
Enclose your keep
Wall in every direction, ideally to natural barriers like cliffs or water, and add large gatehouses. Build staircases from the castle buildings menu so units can reach wall tops, and put towers at key points.
Test with invasions
Trigger three very small invasions first and watch where they approach from on the minimap. Reinforce weak sides, add moats and pitch rigs, then escalate to medium and finally extreme invasions. Use the repair tool after each wave.
Completion checkpoint: when you survive an extreme invasion with your keep intact, you have mastered the core loop the demo teaches. Firefly explicitly asks players to submit the in-demo feedback form.

Skirmish mode walkthrough
Per the developer's October 19, 2026 Steam announcement, the updated demo adds Skirmish as a deathmatch against three CPU opponents: Penryn (the campaign's protagonist), The Snake and Sir Longarm. You start from a keep on a fresh map and must build an economy, raise an army and defeat all three lords. Apply the Free Build loop here, but under pressure: food and taxes keep peasants happy, weapon chains feed the barracks, and early scouting of choke points matters since AI lords expand aggressively. Note that the full game's Skirmish mode will feature eight CPU opponents; the demo limits you to three.
Controls worth knowing
Player feedback on the Steam forums highlights a few current quirks: walls must be removed segment by segment (no drag-delete), there is no drag-scroll speed boost, and barracks have no rally points as of the June demo build. One player video shows moats and drawbridges working together: the drawbridge drops fast and closes slowly, so time your sorties.
Next steps
- The castle building guide covers wall placement, tower coverage and moat design in more depth once you have survived your first invasion.
- The features overview explains the wool and weaving production chains added to this demo, useful before the full release.
- The first look page summarizes how this demo differs from the June version, including improved archer targeting with arrow spread.
FAQ
Is there a full Stronghold 4 demo walkthrough for both modes?
This page is that walkthrough: it covers the tutorial, the complete Free Build loop from stockpile to surviving an extreme invasion, and the Skirmish deathmatch against three CPU lords added on October 19, 2026.
Does the demo include multiplayer?
No. Per the official Steam page and Firefly's announcements, the demo and initial Early Access content are single-player; online PvP and co-op are planned for version 1.0 after roughly six months of Early Access.
When does the full game release?
Stronghold 4 launches on Steam on December 7, 2026, with a 22-mission prequel campaign, full Skirmish with eight CPU opponents, Free Build, Custom Skirmish, Steam Workshop and a level editor.
Can I test my castle without playing an economy?
Yes. Free Build's lightning icon grants gold and honor on demand, so you can skip economy entirely, max your rank, auto-buy everything through the market and go straight to building and siege testing.
Check note: facts come from the official Stronghold 4 Steam page (release date, demo contents, Skirmish update, system requirements), Firefly's site, demo gameplay videos on YouTube (Free Build controls and invasion testing) and the Steam demo feedback thread (interface quirks). Step ordering within Skirmish beyond the developer's mode description reflects community play, not official guidance, and exact demo build differences between June and October are partly unconfirmed.
